How Long Does Solar Installation Take in the Philippines?

This is one of the first things people ask before going solar, and it's a fair question. You're about to spend a significant amount of money on your home, and you want to know what you're getting into.


Here's the honest answer: the actual installation on your roof takes one to three days. But the full process, from the first site visit to the moment your net metering goes live, takes around two to four months.


That gap confuses a lot of homeowners. Let's break down exactly what happens at each stage so you know what to expect.


The Two Timelines You Need to Understand

There are really two separate timelines in any solar installation in the Philippines.

The first is what happens on your property: the survey, the system design, and the physical installation. Your installer controls this part. It moves fast.


The second is what happens outside your property: permits from your Local Government Unit (LGU) and the distribution utility approval process for net metering. Your installer does not control this part. This is where most of the waiting happens.


The difference is almost entirely explained by two external processes: LGU permit processing and the distribution utility's review requirements. Once you understand that, the timeline stops feeling frustrating and starts making sense.


Stage 1: Site Assessment and System Design (1 to 2 Weeks)

Everything starts with a site survey. A solar engineer visits your home to assess your roof's condition, orientation, available space, and shading. They also review your Meralco bills to size the system correctly.


After the survey, the installer prepares your system design, load computation, and single-line diagram. These documents are required for the permit application, so skipping or rushing this step causes problems downstream.


This stage typically takes one to two weeks depending on the installer's workload and how quickly you provide your documents.


Stage 2: LGU Permit Processing (2 to 4 Weeks)

Before anything goes on your roof, your installer needs an electrical permit from your local government unit. Solar panel mounting counts as structural work, which means it requires a building or electrical permit from your city or municipality hall.


Under the DOE's April 2026 circular, Local Government Units must now issue electrical permits within 3 working days and Certificates of Final Electrical Inspection within 7 working days. This is a significant improvement from previous timelines where LGU processing could stretch for weeks with no clear deadline.


In practice, the speed still varies depending on your LGU. Metro Manila cities tend to process permits faster than provincial municipalities. Having all your documents complete when you submit is critical because any missing requirement resets the timeline.

Red flag to watch: if an installer tells you permits aren't needed for small systems, or that they'll handle the paperwork "later," walk away. Skipping permits creates problems down the line, especially if you want to apply for net metering or sell the property.


Stage 3: Physical Installation (1 to 3 Days)

This is the part most people picture when they think of solar installation, and it's actually the fastest stage.


Physical installation on your roof takes one to three days for a standard residential system. A 3 kWp to 5 kWp system on a straightforward roof is typically completed in one to two days. Larger systems or more complex rooftops take two to three days. Your home remains fully operational throughout.


Here's what the installation crew does during those days:

The first day covers roof preparation, marking the panel layout, drilling and mounting the racking system, and pulling the DC wiring from the roof to where the inverter will be placed.

The second day covers panel installation on the racking, inverter mounting, AC wiring, grounding, and final connections.


For larger systems or complex rooftops, a third day handles testing, system commissioning, and checking that everything is performing correctly.

Once installation is complete, your system can generate electricity for your own use immediately. You just can't export to the grid yet until net metering is approved.


Stage 4: Net Metering Application (2 to 4 Weeks Under New Rules)

After installation is done and your electrical inspection certificate is in hand, your installer files the net metering application with your distribution utility, which for most Metro Manila homeowners is Meralco.


This used to be one of the longest and most unpredictable parts of the process. Before the April 2026 DOE circular, Meralco applications routinely sat for 30 to 60 days. Smaller electric cooperatives sometimes took 90 days or longer. No penalty existed for delay, and customers bore the carrying cost of commissioned systems that could not legally export.

That has changed. The DOE's April 2026 circular cuts the maximum processing time for net metering applications down to 10 working days. You can now tell clients with confidence that their net metering will be active in about two weeks after a complete application is submitted.


The key phrase here is "complete application." A missing document resets the clock. This is why working with an experienced installer who knows exactly what to submit matters a lot.

After approval, Meralco installs your bi-directional meter, which tracks both the electricity you consume and the excess you export back to the grid. From this point, your net metering is active.

What Can Speed Things Up?

Choose a complete, experienced installer. An installer who handles permits and net metering applications in-house, not one who outsources the paperwork, keeps the process moving. Ask upfront who handles each stage and what your involvement needs to be.

Respond quickly. When your installer asks for document revisions or additional information, fast turnaround on your end keeps everything on schedule.


Avoid the rainy season for physical installation. Installation can still happen during the rainy months, but scheduling flexibility helps. A day of heavy rain can delay roofwork by one to two days.


Does System Size Affect the Timeline?

For the physical installation, yes, but not dramatically. A larger system takes an extra day or two on the roof. The bigger impact of system size is on the engineering design and the distribution utility review, which may require a more detailed study for systems above a certain threshold.


If you're installing a commercial system of 100 kWp or more, the timeline and the approval process look different from a standard residential setup. Your installer should walk you through what applies to your specific project size.


What Happens While You Wait for Net Metering?


A common question is: can I use my solar system before net metering is approved?

Yes. Once installation is complete and your system is commissioned, it immediately starts generating power for your home during daylight hours. You use solar energy first, and only draw from the Meralco grid when your panels aren't producing enough.


What you can't do yet is export excess electricity back to the grid for credits. That starts the moment Meralco activates your bi-directional meter.


So even during the waiting period, your system is already working and your bill is already going down.


Why the Timeline Is Worth It


Going solar in the Philippines takes a bit of patience, mostly because of government processes that are largely outside your control. But panel prices have dropped significantly, with the cost per watt falling from PHP 80 to 90 per watt in 2024 to PHP 55 to 75 per watt in 2026. The financial case has never been stronger.


Once your system is live, it works for 25 years with minimal maintenance. A two-to-four month setup period for 25 years of reduced electricity bills is a pretty reasonable trade.
